The Vacation Files - Big Potato

We were on holidays in May and spent our time touring around New Brunswick.  Michele had never had her photo taken with the big potato outside of Fredericton.  As you can see below we had a successful Mission.

This is actually a combination of two photos.  If you look close you will see a couple of artifacts from the combination.  We were the only ones there so could only take one photo at a time.  Getting better at the Photoshop tricks.

An Icy Pareidolia

The family went out for a day of boating and exploring with Huit Huit Tours on Saturday.  We went and seen the Thule sites as well as went looking at icebergs.  Over the next few days I will be posting some shots from the sites and the icebergs we saw.  The most interesting iceberg encountered was the one below.

Do you see it?
I love pareidolia.

Little Brother

So finally my little brother is here for a visit. The best use of my Airmile points yet.

Mark has been in the north before with the Canadian military when he did Arctic survival training in Resolute Bay. He got some wicked looking frostbite on that trip. This should be a warmer more comfortable visit. There will be much snowmobiling.

He did get the classic welcome to travelling in the Nunavut when he was 20 minutes from landing in Cape Dorset on Monday and the plane went mechanical. Apparently they could have landed but would not have been able to take off with the malfunctioning gadget. He was then told when arriving back in Iqaluit they would be taking off at 4pm, then 5pm, then 6 pm and finally they said the flight was cancelled. After a brief argument at the counter, First Air gave everyone a free room at the Frobisher Inn and a discount on the meals.

Mom and Dad had no idea Mark was coming and it took the efforts of several people to make sure everything stayed hush hush. Dad was at the airport to pick up a fellow employee and took several looks before he realized that it was Mark standing in the airport. Thought he was going to have some tears. Mom got the surprise later at their apartment after I had to go on a search mission to find her walking around town. There was tears then.

Mission successful and thanks to everyone who helped out keeping it a secret.

Quote of the day “I learned a long time ago how to lie to my parents.”

The plane, the plane!
The first sighting of my little bro.
Here he comes!

Unfourtunatly my photos when he got into the airport didn't turn out because there was to much jumping around.  There will be more photos over the next couple of weeks.

Good to have you here Bro!

Old Dog New Tricks

Dad and I were on a course together at the Arctic College. Not to many father and sons can say they were taking the same course at the same time in a northern remote community. Turns out we both are class clowns. LOL

If you get a minute head over to My Paper Heart and say hello. Iqaluit has another new blogger. Not sure what has happened to the Cape Dorset blogging community but we aren't the blogging capital anymore.

Also the Nunnies are back so head over to this Post to vote for the different categories. This blog wasn't nominated for anything so I'm not plugging for me.

A Birds Eye View

My house is just to the left of center with the brown roof.  My parents purchased the building with the red roof to the left of mine.  My boss lives in the bigger house to the right of center with the grey roof.

Google earth is fun.

Like Father Like Son

My Mom took the photo below of Dad and me leaning on the railing at the Government of Nunavut building in Cape Dorset. Now your first thought may be look at the lazy government employees but this photo was taken at about 10 minutes left to go at lunch. So the next question logically would be why are we leaning on the railing? Well we both left to eat lunch at Dad and Moms apartment and left our jackets behind with our keys in them. We had to wait for someone to come along and unlock the door for us. Yep like Father like Son.

Note. The little guy is Dad.
On the Maxim magazines top 100 feared men of all time, Dad's ranked in at 38th. What shriveled up old Bastard can still put the fear of God in you.

Duck Eggs

Michele had the opportunity to go boating with friends and she came back with some duck eggs. Mom used some of them to make donuts and after several taste tests they do taste different than using eggs from the store. But in a good way. An Inuk friend told Michele to try eating a couple after they have been frozen. Apparently it is like eating ice cream.

An Evening at the Park

Before Michele left to see family in the south we spent an evening at the Park. Photos below.

If I wanted to spend the time I could have made the sky blue.
Runoff is everywhere and makes nice designs in the sand and mud. Luckily I like to play in both. I had taken about 20 photos of Michele on the swings at this point. This was her telling me the next boot won't miss.

My Mommy is Here!

My Dad came up to work in Cape Dorset just over 1/2 a year ago and now has his own apartment. (Love ya Dad but glad you have your own place). So my Mom decided it was time for her to make the journey as well. They have rented out their southern home and plan to be up here for awhile. The arrival as told in Photos.

I've missed my Mommy.

The lights are on. Won't be much longer now.
I see a plane in the distance.
Taxing in.
MOMMY!!
Couple of relieved and happy faces. My Mom doesn't like to fly.
What a serious face. Smile Mom your in Cape Dorset!
I Love You Mom.

Blogging Vacation

I have been on a blogging vacation. I have been very busy at work and have been travelling alot in the last couple of months. I just haven't had the energy or motivation to blog. In fact I leave again Friday for seven days and will be heading to Hall Beach and Igloolik. I do have some things to blog about and will try to get them out before I leave on Friday.

Here's a bit of what has been happening:

There won't be a Pangnirtung Part two because I had a food allergy attack while I was there and was just to sick to get out and explore. I didn't miss any work time but it was unpleasant. Such is life. I did go back to Pangnirtung for a different reason but was only there overnight and had lots to do in a short time. There is a token photo below.

Michele's Mom came in today to visit and will be staying for about a month or so. I will be posting some photos later this week. She is very excited.

A future post will have some photos from being out on the land. I have been out a lot but haven't been taking the camera with me. I will be more disciplined in the future because every time we go out I always say "That would be a good photo and that would be a good photo. Gee I wish I had my camera with me". LOL.

Thanks to the folks that stop by on a regular basis and I will be up to normal blogging soon.

Gone for the Week

I haven't felt like posting lately but be assured that I will be back in the grips of multiple postings soon. A couple of notes .....

-I'm out for the week and won't be back until Friday. It is unlikely that I will get a chance to post while I'm gone. There will be photos when I return.

-We have snow on the ground and it is staying. Snow machines are flying around the community again.

-We are now less than two weeks away from the start of our holidays.

I will see if I can get Michele to post a few notes this week.

Later.....

Misty 9/25/1969 - 10/13/2008

We received bad news yesterday that my cousin Misty passed away after a short battle with cancer. She was only 39 and leaves behind 2 children.

I will always remember seeing my cousin around town in Petitcodiac and each of us saying "Hi cous!". Misty would always take the time to stop and chat and when we would part company I always felt I came away better for it. She had a wonderful laugh and was a loving mother.

By cous.

Denmark in My Heart

As I was checking out the traffic feed (yes I'm addicted) one of the hits was from the medieval capital of Denmark, a place called Roskilde. Coincidentally we received an old photo from my Mom last night with a picture of my Grampie and his brothers in it. All were born in Denmark and immigrated here through Ellis Island in New York with their parents. From there they went to Quebec, Canada then settled in southern New Brunswick. Grampie was 8 years old when he arrived in New Brunswick. I have always missed my Grampie John and the picture brought back some very good memories of him. These were some big men back in the day. There is a few stories I've heard over the years about their size and strength. Grampie was 6'4" and strong as an oxen.

From left to right. Gunner Ravn (youngest), Olaf Ravn (Oldest), John Ravn (Grampie). We think the little girl in the background is Olaf's oldest daughter. I definitely inherited my grampies hair and size (I am a couple of inches shorter).

-Update-
(Thanks Mom)
There is one brother, Peter, and two sisters Ellen and Sara not in the photo. Peter was the oldest of the brothers. Gunner died last year and was the last surviving brother. Sara is not spelled wrong. In danish sara is spelled without the H.

Cape Dorset Photo 10

Photo taken mid July. That was the last time we seen a day without rain I think. I will have to get an underwater case for my camera so I can go out and play in the rain. Anyway back to this photo it was taken out by the tank farm and that is Michele and Dad in the background by the van. I can't hold a camera straight so why fight it.
